Question Hurricane Irma Saved Me $100

... but that's not really the focus of this thread.

I got a summons for jury duty. Now, I'm one of the few people who wouldn't mind serving jury duty, but I'm in Idaho, and the courtroom is in Florida. So I logged in to the court website, filled out the registration form, and noted that I don't live in Florida.

And I was accepted.

Further, the acceptance notice said there would be $100 fine if I didn't appear. I tried calling the court to explain that I don't live in Florida, but the phone numbers that didn't have recordings didn't answer, either.

I got a notice this weekend, "All cases scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 have either continued or settled. All jurors that were summonsed for this date are hereby released from jury service." Released from service means I don't have to pay the fine, and won't have to deal with this for another year.

All of this is interesting, of course (to me, at least), but still not the thrust of this post, which is, what part of "I don't live in Florida" do they not understand?

Lightbulb "what we have here"

...is a failure to communicate
you live in Idaho & you applied for jury duty in Florida

thats what you said.
you logged in to the site and registered for jury duty noting you are currently in Idaho.

thats more interest than Id show for something pretty much impractical & of no interest whatever.
as I understand you, its your own actions that got you accepted for jury duty.
stop doing that shit, OK?

I live in Arkansas & Im not gonna register for jury duty there.
much less Tennessee, Arizona, Vermont or California.

ps if you wouldnt drive down to Florida for jury duty why would
you send them $100 you have a better use for?
dont repeat these actions & you wont have to deal with it again next year or ever

No, that's not what I said. Read it again. Particularly the first sentence of the second paragraph, where it says, "I received a summons for jury duty."

If you had read the entirety of my original post, instead of just a word or two here and there, you would know that the $100 was a fine for not appearing.

I am required by law to respond to the summons, and I am required by law to pay the fine for not appearing. If I fail to do either, the county can issue a warrant for my arrest (contempt of court). If I ever travel to Florida again (which I will need to do in four years, to renew my license), I can be arrested, tried, and thrown in jail.

Ever consider that the $100 is just a hidden form of taxation. How many thousands of FL "residents" spend a good part of each year (or even the whole) year out of state.

You do realize there is a little box that say excuse me from jury duty that you check, you then write an explanation as to why (out of the state). They then send you back a notice saying you have been released from jury duty.

As usual, you didn't bother reading what I wrote before responding. I went to the county web site specifically to check that box. But, as I clearly stated, "I don't live in Florida" is not a valid reason to be excused from jury duty.

I honestly wasn't trying to start anything I was justing offering information. But sense you want to act that way no what you said is you went to the website to fill out the application, and that you noted you didn't live in florida. Well if you check the box to be dismissed you don't need to fill out the application. So the fact that you filled out the application would indicate you didn't check the box nor knew about it. And you can clearly state where you live all you want if you filled out the app, they don't look at the reasons to be excused section. So no you were not clear on what you said, and no what you initially said is not what you just said here.

Please don't offer advice when you don't know what you are talking about. You have never had to respond to a jury duty summons in Florida.

In Florida, you fill out the application and then ask to be excused. Many reasons appear on the list: being party to a lawsuit, knowing the plaintiff or defendant, being related to a police officer, and about a half-dozen others. Not living in Florida is not on the list.

Now, please stop posting in this thread. I don't want it moved to MD.

You really shouldn't make the assumption that people don't know what they are talking about. The form you filled out is the form for if you cannot legally serve on the jury. Hence why their is no selection for out of state. If you had clicked where it said excusal, it would have brought you to a different form that you then give a detailed written response as to why you can't serve.

So you filled out the form for jury duty, and stated basically you had no legal reasons you could not serve. You should not have filled out that form, but you should have filled out the excusal form.

So yes I know what I'm talking about.

NO, you don't. You haven't seen the form, you are only guessing what's on it. In order to see that form, you need my candidate ID, which you don't have. You also need to know which Florida county website to visit. I'm pretty sure you don't know that, either.

Garison I'm seriously not trying to argue with you. I was offering help. But yes I can see the form all I have to do is click the little button that says printable version of this form. It is not like it is some super secret paper work that only jurors get to see. I also don't need to know what county you are in, if you got called in for jury duty that means it is a state level court in which all the paper work is the same across the state. Also florida has very clear instructions on what you need to do to be dismissed from jury duty, so I don't even need to see the forms to know that you filled out the wrong form.

The form you filled out is to be released from jury duty for a legal reason, hence the list of reasons to be excused, those are all the legal reasons you could not serve on a jury duty. Simply by sending in that form you stated I have no legal reason to be excused. You need to fill out the form that excuses from jury for a hardship. If you send in the form you sent in they will not consider releasing you because out of state is not a legal reason.

Lastly it doesn't really matter what state your in. Our courts are a structured system across the country, while the paper work may very slightly from state to state the same basic process is the same across the country.

As usual, you don't know what you're talking about. This was a summons from a county court, not a state court. So, yes, it's different from other county courts, and you can't see the form I filled out without knowing the county that contacted me.

As usual, you are completely wrong.

As usual, you don't know what you're talking about. This was a summons from a county court, not a state court. So, yes, it's different from other county courts, and you can't see the form I filled out without knowing the county that contacted me.

As usual, you are completely wrong.

You mean the form that looks a lot like this :

Jury Duty Excusal Form
Note: Fields marked with an * are required.
If your Internet browser does not support online forms, you must submit a paper form.

Request for excusal must be submitted┬spam5 working days┬spamprior to reporting or it will be denied.

If you choose an excusal reason that is not listed on this page, your request must be mailed in to be addressed by a judge. For example: I am physically sick or disabled (note from healthcare provider required); I am a practicing attorney or practicing physician; any other reason not listed.

Enter your Selection ID number and Date Summoned as it appears on your summons. Check the applicable reason for disqualification, excusal, or postponement then click on the SUBMIT button.

An email response to your request will be sent to you generally within three (3) days following receipt of your request.

Also you do realize county court is state court. County court follows state laws. The only state that county court is separate from state court is Alaska. While the forms may vary in appeaeance the forms are indentical in information.

So sorry for trying to help garison. Simply because the storm delayed court does not mean you will be excused. You will get called back as soon as things are back up and running and be in the same situation you are now. If you want to be ignorant and not listen to my advice, then fine have fun paying the fine. So sorry for trying to help. Don't worry I won't be back to help.
