Default Answered: I Need a Sports Car

My wife insists that I write a novel.

In this story, the main protagonist drives a clunky sedan. He used to drive a flashy sports car, but now drives a clunky sedan, because his other car was totaled in an accident. The sports car was an older classic model, but one that someone could be reasonably expected to afford. The insurance company, however, said, "That's just an old car," and gave him only one-third of the value (monetary or prestige), which is why he's driving the sedan, a car that all self-respecting former sports car owners would be ashamed to drive.

My question is, what sports car fits those specifications? For extra credit, which sedan did he buy?

Note that no one will get writer's credit for their answers here, though if I find the need for a computer-forum scene (which seems likely at this point), I may include the winner's handle.

Thanks.

EDIT 1: I forgot to mention this. The sports car has to seat four. Comfortably is not necessary.
EDIT 2: Thanks to Huck for pointing this out: the "sports car" could be a muscle car, as long as it's a "classic".

Default thats just about as eclectic as it gets

his sports car was a red 1971 Fiat 124 Spyder convertible.

he ended up with a 2003 Nissan Sentra sedan.
(a better car, but way down on the cool factor)

edit: I regret to inform you that ALMOST ALL the classic sports cars had only 2 seats.
your story needs help with a huge plot hole.

1987 IROC-Z camaro if your character is a yankee, 1985 BMW 535i for some one who is perhaps more sophisticated

And for the current beater, Pontiac Aztec

Or maybe I don't. Muscle cars would be okay, as long as they are considered "classic" by some. The point is that he lost control of the first car, and now has to drive the second.

could you describe your character a little more? his age, nationality/country he is living in?

The 4 passenger sports car thing makes it a little more trickey and i think we can collectively find the right vehicle for your guy with a little more back story

Half of that I don't have figured out yet. I had a character description written up a while ago, but most of that changed when I left the planning phase and started writing. like, he doesn't have a job any more (he drinks too much).

You have, however, pointed out that I need a before-and-after character description for Matthew. What follows is sketchy, at best.

He's American, and young -- probably mid-twenties. In fact, almost certainly mid-twenties, because parts of the story won't work if he's older.

Before the accident, he was happy-go-lucky, had money and a good job, drove a nice (sports or muscle) car, and had fun going out with his friends on the weekends. He was a really nice guy.

Afterward, he started drinking (and is drunk most of the time), lost his job (he mooches off of his brother's girlfriend), and most things depress him. Where he used to be energetic, now he's lazy. People who used to know him comment on how far down he's come. People who never met him before think he's a jackass and/or a bum.

As I amended above, it could also be a muscle car. I just need three people in the car at the time of the accident.

This one sounds good, though I want more options before voting it up.

If Matthew is 25 today, he would have bought the car in 2009-2010, when it was 11-12 years old. That's a good age, I think.

I've ridden in Mustangs, and the poor handling on slick roads makes this a good choice. Kelly Blue Book gives this model a value of about $795, which severely limits our hero's choice of replacement. It's got a bench seat in the rear, with absolutely no knee room, which gives me several ideas about the accident.

The IROC Z was also a good choice, but I know there are people who have never heard of it, so saying "87 Z" would have confused some readers.

Still waiting for a few more suggestions before I decide.

Kudos to HighHorsePower for this suggestion. It fits well into what I was looking for. The Aztek he suggested, however, does not. The built-in tent is a deal-breaker. When I was looking that up on a list of crappy cars the other day, I saw the Ford Fiesta right above it. That serves my needs for the replacement junker.

I was finally able to finish this passage.
I hopped into my piece-of-shit Ford Fiesta and cranked the ignition. I never locked it; no one would ever sink low enough to steal this junker. As the engine wheezed to life, I longed for my old '98 Mustang. A bright red convertible with a V6 engine and five-speed transmission. Plush seats in a “dual cockpit” interior that surrounded me like a leatherette hug. The roar of the engine as I raced down the highway made me feel more alive. I loved that car, and dreamed of it every time I started up this worthless pile of crap I was forced to buy after the accident, when the insurance company wouldn't pay me enough to replace the 'Stang.
This is just the first draft; I'll pretty it up later.

Thanks again to everyone who played.

You're probably right. As I said, though, this is a first draft. I was thinking of making it a GT, but there was a reason I went for the base model instead, which naturally I can't remember. I also thought about the Cobra, but only 2000 were made, so I'd have to figure out how a teenager could afford one, even used.

He could have gotten it from a relative, say a favorite uncle with whom he shared a love of performance cars, who died and left the car in his will to him. It was his uncle's "baby" that he kept garaged and in perfect condition, and your protagonist was often over at his house helping out with its care. That would make its loss even more devastating since he was entrusted with it by his uncle's and had destroyed it. Suddenly getting that car as a teenager would have boosted his reputation and popularity, too, but now he doesn't have that either.

That's a good point. The uncle could have been better off than Matthew's family, and bought it new, then gifted it to Matthew when he graduated high school. The car would have been about twelve years old at that time. I'm not quite sure how to work this into the story, but I can figure it out.

i know it's too late, but how about an Eagle Talon? essentially a re-badged Mitsubishi Eclipse, it was actually a pretty decent car. Last model year was 1998, company was dismantled in 1998/1999, so I imagine in 2009 it would be super affordable... there's also the Dodge Stealth (last model year 1996) or the Mitsubishi 3000GT (last model year 1999), both having niche coolness factors. Truly though, in Hawaii, the 2 cars that would have garnered INSTANT respect, even in 2009, would be a Honda Prelude, or an Acura Integra.
