Default Answered: How Do I Stop A Windows Upgrade?

I have Windows 10 on my PC. However, I also sometimes have crappy internet, which Windows 10 doesn't understand. It tries to download all of the files, but one or more gets corrupted, and it doesn't realize that. So, each time it tries to do the update, it can't install the corrupted files, so it stops and reinstalls the previous version. This was bad enough when this happened once a week, but now Windows is saying, "This upgrade is really important," and does it every day. Each day, my computer is abducted for several hours for no reason.

So, how can I stop this? Are there setting I can change or files I can delete which will prevent the update from happening?

One of these ought to do the trick:

The metered connection setting is probably the safest option to make sure you are at least getting the most critical updates.

Did both the metered connection and stopping the service. We'll see tomorrow if this worked.

If you stopped the service then the metering won't make any difference. It won't check at all for updates, metered or not.

You might try this. It worked for me to stop the auto updates and lets me run the updates when I am ready.

I'm not sure what I stopped, but it didn't work. It tried to do the update while I was out today. (Sneaky damn thing.) I found another thing called "Windows Update" and disabled that. This wasn't there the first time; I disabled "Windows Update Orchestrator".

Question what is the problem update & its filesize

its very confusing to me
will you check your update history for the failed update(s) & list it/them
along with the filesize? (if possible)

do you mean you are running Windows 7 & it keeps failing to update
to 10 because of crap internet connection/speed?

if not then what is it trying to update to?
not that I care but I havent heard of a new Windows 10 service pack
or major update like from 8 to 8.1

the Windows update downloader should manage the download of
needed update files at any speed across multiple connections
over even a long period of interrupted time.

I knew of a lady who got her laptop the update to 8 from 7 at the local
library by many visits each week over a period of 3~4 months.
(its 3 or 4 GB at least at a maximum of about 50kBps )

I do not recommend you to even try to run Windows with updates disabled
my BEST suggestion is a long cat5 ethernet cable to a friendly
(or siightly bribed) neighbor.

or just actually take your tower to a location where you can connect to
another (slightly bribed again) persons internet, mouse & keyboard.

its not 10 minutes actual work out & back in and cant be necessary that often.
I leave my computer on at night so it can update while I sleep. (hint-hint )

I hope this helps (or you can mark this stupidest suggestion)
chromebook

ps to stop 7 or 8.1 updating to 10 use Never10.e x e
(you can trust it, I do)

Well, it seems not to be stopping. I stopped the "Windows Updater" and the "Windows Update Orchestrator", and it still wanted to do an update this morning. This was a security update, supposedly, but it wants the newest version of Windows 10 before it will install that, and the newest version doesn't install.

So, how do I stop the security updates?

I'm going to hunt down the update program and see if renaming it will help.

I am guessing it is not a notebook, if it was you could easily go sit in a McDonalds(or library, etc.) and use their free WiFi to download and install the updates.

You can pause it until you get a way to reliably get the updates

I'm going to hunt down the update program and see if renaming it will help.

Don't do that. The program that runs Windows update (svchostspamspamspamspamspam) runs a ton of other system functions. Windows will likely just automatically replace the file if you do anything to it, which you probably can't because it's actively running in memory, so the local file system will lock it for renaming or deletion.

I control what gets applied via group policy on the machines we administer, but that's a domain-level process and we have WSUS servers that manage the releases. I'm not sure what to tell you on a local machine running Win 10 Home or some other base version of the OS.

Well, I have retired this computer in favor of a "new" laptop ($80 at a pawn shop!). The screen resolution isn't as good, but it's faster and has more disk space. And the current Windows 10. It's not likely that I'll ever find work again, but, if I do, I can pay someone to mount the latest Windows updates.
