CC would have cost way too much for the Sox to even attempt going after and honestly im not even overly bitter about losing out on Texiera either because IMO the Yankees lineup needed him more so than the Sox
@ Rogue The sox did over pay for everyone on that list except for Beckett
@ Nat DJ is right they had a ton come off their books in 2008 and will be well under what just came off. The only potential harmful contract of the 3 just signed is Burnett's given his history of injuries other than that the singings are solid

I love when people say this - no attack on you directly.
There is free agency - players take the most money, rather than taking a little less to go somewhere else. Hell, the offer the Yanks made to Burnett - I think it was him - was hardly different then the Braves offer.
Blame the players for being mercenaries. CC could have gone back to the Brewers if he liked, for less money. Burnett could have taken less to go somewhere else. But they jumped at the money - as did Tex.
The Yankees spend in order to put a winning team on the field, and their fans appreciate that. And by the way, teams get more money from the yanks in revenue sharing, merch sales, and luxury tax then some teams spend on their entire payroll.
This is the way the league is set up - people should stop complaining about what the Yankees spend, and complain about what other teams DON'T spend, and complain about players having no loyalty.
And as someone else noted, the 2009 payroll will be less than 08.
