Im a little surprised by all of the "poor kid" comments considering their culture. Did you guys read the article? This kid isn't in a country like America where people are disgusted by the sight of it, and probably scared of her as well. She is in a country where people think she is the reincarnation of A GOD. The town is building a temple to that god in response to the baby. People are coming from miles away to TOUCH HER FEET. I mean, maybe "Poor baby" in the sense that shes had fame unfairly thrust upon her, but think about it... She is A LOT better off in India than she would be in the United States.
People here would be disgusted by the very sight of her. People there are worshipping her. I'm GLAD this happened in India.
As long as she is physically healthy, I don't feel so much of the "poor kid". Maybe it's because I grew up around a whole lot of adults who have various conditions such as mental retardation, deformities, deafblindness, etc (my mother is a social worker with a private care facility for adults who need caretakers). I've seen how american's react to even the slightest mental or physical abnormalities. People are scared, disturbed, freaked out.
Better that she is in India than here. Better that she is treated like the reincarnation of a god than a freakshow.

I see what you mean, but keep this in mind:
In neither cases that poor kid (and I stick to it) is gonna have a normal life...
Definately, it's better to have an abnormal deity life instead of an abnormal freak life, but still...
I hope you see my point there.

With the per cent of the world's population it probably goes with the odds. I am sure that China also has a large number of anamalies also, they are just less open to the world.

I won't look at the pics and hope I never see them by accident. I am amazed that they are starting to worship the child as an incarnation of Durga in the rural areas where the word has spread and I just hope that that insures her of a good life.

I genuinely don't understand why y'all have such a hard time/refuse to look at the pictures. I mean, its a bit unreal but its not disgusting. Actually, I kind of want to see a vide of her. The article says that all 4 of her eyes blink at the same time, etc... I want to see if she has any independant control of her mouth or eyes. Maybe its just the Biology major in me, but im not disgusted.... Im intrigued.
And pHd, I totally see your point. Mine was more just a "lesser of two evils" statement. Its not avoidable that these things happen sometimes, and if its gonna happen at least its in a place where she not treated like a freakshow.

Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.

I read today though, FP, that they refuse to take her to see a specialist. The only doctor who has seen her is their village doctor. There dont appear to be any health complications... But they wont take her to a specialist and they wont get a CT scan of her internal organs to see.
Even if she is eating/breathing/acting like a normal infant, you can't just refuse to accept the fact that there might be latent problems that need to be addressed early. Thats the ONLY part of this whole thing that bothers me.

Didn't see that bit and you're right there could be complications in the future hopefully if there any problems they'll be able to sort it out.

Lol - Just a little side note. Every article I read has listed a different god as what the villagers believe she is the reincarnation of.
One said Durga, one said Vishnu, one said Shakti, and one said Ganesh.

Sorry, Sil, not the impression I meant to give. I won't look because I don't like the way they sensationalize these things and I have nothing but sympathy for this poor little girl. I just don't want to see her.
OK, my wife wanted to look at the pics so I did. I still feel just as bad for this little girl and hope there are no health complications.
