It's interesting to see that using fear to mobilise populations is not a novelty of the post-9/11 world. The Declaration of Independence, with its disgraceful passage about the “merciless Indian savages” against the peace-loving colonists is good old fashioned propaganda, and they knew it. “That hapless race of native Americans who we are exterminating with such merciless and perfidious cruelty... among the heinous sins of this nation, for which I believe God will one day bring (it) to judgment,” as John Quincy Adams recognized long after his own major contributions to these atrocities had ended.

Everybody reads The Declaration of Independence all the time, but it’s one of those things which you read and you don’t see what it says. “The merciless Indian savages whose known way of warfare is the massacre of women and children”, and so on and so forth. Well, by now there’s been so much mythology that people may not see what’s wrong with that. But this was the eighteenth century, and Thomas Jefferson knew precisely what he was writing. He knew precisely that it was he and his buddies who were the merciless European savages who were teaching the Native Americans that the way you fight a war is you wait till all the braves leave the village and then you go in and murder everybody. That’s the way Europeans fight wars, and the colonists were busy teaching that to the native people who didn’t understand it—they thought you go out and fight each other when you’re armed. The fact they could say that is amazing enough, but the fact that those words can be read with reverence for 200 years without anybody noticing that there’s something wrong about them, in this “great founding document”, that’s pretty astonishing. It’s the same thing when scholars write about what they call “American innocence” or “American naiveté”, and it’s kind of an endearing characteristic of the United States. If you want to know how endearing it is, ask what it’s like to get slaughtered.

Imperial powers have always thought that the natives shouldn't fight back. It's still this way today for all those people defending themselves and their lands against the American aggressors and occupiers. With (an underestimate of) 1,000 military bases in 38 countries around the world, its easy to see why its raised the ire of adversaries like al Qaeda, has a tendency to grate on even the closest of allies like the Japanese, and costs American taxpayers a fortune every year. Although in this list of 38 countries, the 208-page, 2010 DoD bullshit report omits Afghanistan and Iraq. Now I can't think why they would do that, can you?

Yeah I noticed that too when reading Newton. That might have been how they wrote things back in "the good old days".
