What do you think of NY's new law regarding prostiution?

I have a question- how do you know if a woman wanting a taxi is a prostitute??? How do you differentiate between prostitutes and girls on a night out who dress scantily or like tarts? What do you think this law will achieve? Taxi drivers will be afraid to take fares from women who are scantily dressed in fear it might be a sting? Then the women will be offended at being mistaken for prostitutes? Or a taxi driver could pick up a prostitute or client without even realizing and then being caught and arrested.

IMO this will achieve nothing to stop prostitution and it will reinforce stereotypes of prostitutes having a certain appearance.

IMO this is one of the most stupid laws a "devloped" western county has passed. Just another "feel good" law passed just for the fun of passing laws and making it look like you are doing something.

Summary- in real life there is NO WAY TO TELL if a man/woman is a client/prostitute just by looking at them. As stated above call girls often travel dressed modestly (and are wearing kinky clothing underneath their casual clothes, or they keep their kinky clothing in a bag to change into).

NYC cabbies are a street savvy lot.
They know who the working girls are.

Hookers act differently than girls just heading to the club.

The application of the law will have to give the cabbies some leeway because if theres reasonable doubt, cases will be dismissed.

NY is a huge city taxi drivers can't possibly know every working girl. And it's not just streetwalkers there are call girls too.

Obviously the law can't be enforced with 100% accuracy.

The ho's would have to be pretty obvious about it and prostitutes are typically not discrete.

For example if you see a middle aged guy in a suit with a teenager who looks like a gogo dancer and want to go to the they nearest hotel, there's some work going on there. If he's giving her money in the cab, probably a ho. If she's going down on him in the cab and he gives her money, probably a ho.

NY cabbies see a lot of weird stuff and they generally know the difference between girls hitting the town for some fun and girls who are working.

I used to work a contract job for a non profit in a bad part of town.

If a girl is walking down the middle of the street in thigh high boots, booty shorts and a bikini top on a Wednesday afternoon while looking blankly up at the sky, yeah, probably a ho.
Prostitutes are anything but discrete because they're typically high while working.

Yoko Littner however is an anime character so she can get away with it.

The NY soda law would prohibit the sale of oversized soft drinks.
If the ho went to Jersey and brought back two 64-oz cokes, she could only be arrested for prostitution.

IMO I think the only way to deal with this issue is to just make it a legal trade and have the girls pay taxes on their income

Doesn't apply. If they're not prostitutes but cops dressed in 'fancy' clothes then it's legal to drive them. If they tell the cabbie that they're prostitutes, he doesn't have to believe them but can assume that they're just girls out for a good time.

It's a real wowsers law, though. Another of these 'We seem to be doing something' acts rather than actually doing something.

Notice prostitution laws are never written in such a way to cause the ladies to cease the activity, but to charge the so-called "john" or other provider. If arrested they'll likely be back on the street in hours, and they get a small fine when the court date comes up.

Compare that to what the "john" gets. Them are some expensive bj's.

Sweden, Norway and Iceland actually have laws against buying sex but not selling it which means only the clients are criminalized.
