American movies and television more than show the trend of only profits and no art or style in programming. And don't even get me started on the staged "reality" shows.

The main problem with the Top Gear: US was that it did not have the state-funded BBC paying its bills. Of course American shows cater to making money. How else are you going to pay for things? If the American producers weren't worried about profits or the bottom line, the show could have been epic (but probably not; see the second point later in this rant). Even Top Gear UK started off quirky, the early series weren't as entertaining as the later ones. But it eventually grew to cult-status because of the ridiculous challenges laid out to the presenters. There was no way they would be able to do some of the crazy and inane challenges their British counterparts got away with... that and used cars are more expensive in the US than in the UK. Who ever heard of buying a used supercar for less than 5,000 quid. It can't be done. You'd need 15,000 dollars, at least...

Point number 2: The American team tried, but it was working against a serious error in casting. The three hosts have no personality whatsoever. Had they gotten presenters more similar to the original cast, such as, Sal Masekela, Patrick Dempsey, and George Takei (as the great presenter, the pretty-boy, and the slow one, although I guess George could also be the one they make homosexual jokes about, too) it would have been an easier transition for the American Audience. Even the Autralian and German version have a more similar trio of presenters than the American one did. Where the American show failed in premise, it was compounded by sucky hosts.

I didn't know there were an Australian and German versions. Interesting.
I think their main downfall was that we can watch the BBC one here already.

in the efforts of bumping a stolen thread, started reading a book by Martin Roach: The Top Gear Story.

Very interesting read...

I don't know when it will air around the rest of the world, but the latest series has just finished. Now you may not like this, but this series has actually been mostly about cars, rather than things getting blown up. But it's good to see that you like socialised things, i.e. everybody putting in an equal amount and getting something back that they like and wanted.
