So I Had a Go at Creating a GIF from a Video
be gentle.. it's my first time 
edit: well that worked pretty well! here's another one, it's kinda huge though.

first i used ffmpeg to extract frames saved as jpg's, then fireworks CS3 to watermark/make the animation.
you can find ffmpeg by googling, although the latest build for some reason didn't work for me and i don't remember when i got the build that did.
once you get it, open up command prompt, go to the directory where you installed ffmpeg and use command line:
ffmpeg -ss 9 -i video.avi -f image2 -sameq -r 4 -vframes 30 -s 320x240 test%02d.jpg
where -ss 9 means start extracting frames at 9 seconds into the video, -r 4 means take 4 frames a second, -vframes 30 means take 30 frames, -s resizes it to whatever size you want, and test%02d.jpg means number them like test01.jpg, test02.jpg, etc.
then it's a matter of opening up all the files as frames in fireworks and saving it as an animation. i tried a few other programs like gimp and imagemagick but fireworks gave me the best quality after some tweaking. there's also a program called video to gif converter or something like that which i stumbled on but you have to pay for it and i'm not sure how good it is.

because i took some frames from later on in the video and reversed them to try and make it look like it's an endless loop.. and i didn't even notice the guy until after i finished.
