64% Still Rate Being A Mother As A Woman’s Most Important Role

Sunday, May 09, 2010

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Americans think that being a mother is the most important role for a woman to fill in today’s world, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Eighteen percent (18%) disagree, and another 18% aren’t sure.

These figures are virtually unchanged from our survey a year ago, and have remained constant over the past few years.

Women are more likely than men to think being a mother is their most fulfilling role. There is virtually no difference of opinion on this between those with children in the home and those who don't have children living with them.

(Want a free daily e-mail update ? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

This nationwide survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on May 5-6, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted byPulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Fifty-five percent (55%) of adults say their mother is still living, and 64% of those adults say they will visit her for Mother's Day. Twenty-five percent (25%) plan to call. Just four percent (4%) won't do either, and six percent (6%) haven't made up their minds yet.

Women under the age of 40 are nearly twice as likely to be visiting their mother as men under 40.

Twenty-two percent (22%) of adults plan to send Mom flowers for Mother's Day, but that's down slightly from a year ago.

One-third (34%) of adults feel that Mother’s Day is one of our nation’s most important holidays. Just 10% consider it one of the least important, while 55% rate it somewhere in between.

Americans continue to view Christmas and Independence Day as the nation’s most important holidays, while Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day have been at the bottom of the list for several years now. Mother’s Day ranks in the middle.

Women in the USA and around the world are waiting longer to start families, shows a new federal report released Wednesday. The average age of new moms was 25 in the USA and 29 in other developed countries such as Japan and Switzerland, it says.

The report from the National Center for Health Statistics, shows that on average, new U.S. moms were the youngest of 14 countries reviewed, for both years studied: 21.4 in 1970 and 25.0 in 2006.

Many moms over 35

Data from the United Nations Demographic Yearbook for 2006 shows that the U.S. teen birth rate was more than eight times higher than in Japan, seven times higher than in Denmark and Sweden, and more than three times as high as in Canada. Those statistics, compiled by the United Nations Statistics Division, are based on annual questionnaires to more than 230 national statistical offices worldwide.

The new U.S. federal analysis also found:

•The average age of moms at first birth increased in all U.S. states and the District of Columbia between 1970 and 2006. In 2006, Massachusetts had the highest average mothers' age at first birth, 27.7 years, and Mississippi had the lowest, 22.6 years.

•Between 1990 and 2006, the average age increased for all racial and ethnic groups.

•The proportion of first births among women age 35 and older increased from one out of 100 in 1970 to out out of 12 in 2006.

•21% of first births were to teen mothers in 2006, down from 36% in 1970.

"Most people in the U.S. still have babies in their 20s," says fertility researcher S. Philip Morgan of Duke University in Durham, N.C. "The mean age of childbearing at 25 is late but not that late."

The report also found that among racial and ethnic groups in 2006, the oldest average age at first birth (28.5 years) was to Asian or Pacific Islander women and the youngest (21.9 years) was to Alaska Native women.

For white women, the average age for first-time mothers, 26, is a year older than the average for the U.S. population. For black women, the average age at first birth was 22.7 years; it was 23.1 years among Hispanics.

Longevity a factor

The report noted dramatic increases in the average age during the 1970s and 1980s and a less dramatic but steady rise since.

There are many reasons for the age increase since 1970, says Elizabeth Gregory, director of the Women's Studies Program at the University of Houston.

The availability of the birth control pill (which arrived in the 1960s) had immediate repercussions on the birth rate overall and allowed people to plan their families, she says. Also, greater longevity is making a difference.

"Now people are living longer and can start families later and expect to be around to take care of them," she says.

For her 2008 book Ready: Why Women Are Embracing the New Later Motherhood, Gregory interviewed 113 moms who had first children later in life. She says many cited getting their education and getting established at work as reasons to postpone motherhood.

"They had to get to the point where they were making a decent salary and had the clout to negotiate a family-friendly schedule and not lose their seniority," says Gregory, 51, who had her first child at 39 and adopted a second daughter at age 48.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...births12_N.htm

In the 1970s, 1 in 10 American women ended her childbearing years without having borne a child. In 2008, that figure is now 1 in 5, according to a just-published study from the Pew Research Center's Social and Demographic Trends Project. The study is based on data from the June fertility supplement of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey.

What's more, in 2008, 24% of women between the ages of 40-44 with a master’s, doctoral or professional degree had not had children. (That's almost a quarter of women between the ages of 40-44.) In 1994, 31% of women with such advanced degrees had not had a child. In comparison, women who had less than a high school diploma had a childless rate of 15%; women who had graduated from high school had a childless rate of 17%. Women with some college education had a childless rate of 18%.

A few more figures: 20% of white women between the ages of 40-44 had never borne a child. 17% of black and of Hispanic women were childless in 2008, while 16% of Asian women were childless.

I can't help considering my own situation. I'm 41 years old, Asian American, with a doctoral degree. And, I have a child, a teenager (gawd!) to be exact, Charlie now being 13 years old as he was born in 1997.

More than a few of the women whom I went to graduate school with are childless and not married. And, more than a few (as in the majority) had their children when they were in their mid-30s, when they felt that they were far enough in long in their careers to be able to devote less time to those.

That said, motherhood and the better part of my professional life as a Classics professor have overlapped. I have had to make decisions that have meant my professional career has not been quite what I had envisioned it to be. But for me, motherhood always comes first. Charlie (who's on the moderate to severe end of the autism spectrum) has had a great, great many needs and many times the question of 'how should I prioritize' doesn't even arise. There are very few (very, very few) people who can take care of Charlie and understand his communications and needs. A recent study indeed notes that mothers of autistic children who work 'pay' at their jobs, due to the extra demands of raising their kids. While I do feel a tug when I read about their latest book or award, I really do feel it's all more than worth it.

Women in the US have choices today that they didn't in the past; it's not assumed that the only way a woman can feel 'fulfilled' is by having children and being a mother. Will this mean a change in how our society sees women's roles?

Can't say with any certainty, being a man and all, but my wife sure seems to enjoy it more even than I do...

Lightbulb New research reveals why women want sex

New research reveals why women want sex

By Gail Johnson, October 1, 2009

Alfred Kinsey became famous for studying what people get up to in their bedrooms. But until recently, little research has been dedicated to why people do what they do. Texas psychologists Cindy M. Meston and David M. Buss decided to ask women a simple question—why do you have sex?—and got some unexpected results.

“Responses ranged from extreme altruism—to make a person feel better about themselves, even when they said they were not at all attracted to them but felt sorry for them—to the mundane, people saying they were bored,” Meston, a University of Texas at Austin clinical psychology professor, tells the Georgia Straight in a phone interview.

Some women said they had intercourse to overcome loneliness or because sex had “medicinal” effects on everything from migraine headaches to fibromyalgia. Others turned to sex for revenge, to get back at someone who had cheated on them; still others wanted to experience partners of different races, shapes, and sizes. Then there were those who admitted they had sex for a reason that Meston describes as “borderline evil”: to give someone a sexually transmitted illness.

The two researchers used the information they gathered—during three years spent interviewing more than 1,000 North American women aged 18 to 87—to write Why Women Have Sex: Understanding Sexual Motivations From Adventure to Revenge (and Everything in Between) (Tantor, $38.99).

The pair’s research does away with outdated stereotypes that women have sex only for love or commitment. By far the most common reason women said they get between the sheets is sensual bliss.

For women, the biggest response for why they had sex was for physical pleasure, for excitement, for orgasm, for physical gratification,” Meston says. What the responses show, according to Meston as well as two Vancouver sexperts, is that women are truly and finally taking charge of their sexuality, allowing themselves to revel in pure pleasure. In other words, sisters are doin’ it for themselves.

“After 20 years of studying sexual dysfunction and sexual problems, I was so happy to see that,” Meston says. “That’s good news.”

Vancouver sex therapist Teesha Morgan says it’s a myth that the main motivations for women wanting sex are love and conception.

“Men have always been thought of as having a greater interest in casual sex than women, but that’s not necessarily true,” Morgan tells the Straight by phone. “Women’s liberation…and the invention of reliable birth control really paved the way for females today. Without much worry of being chastised for having sex outside of wedlock, combined with the empowerment of being able to control pregnancy, women have more reason than ever to explore their sexuality and have sex for virtually any reason they see fit. Women are embracing their sexuality and that gives a sense of psychological empowerment.”

Bianca Rucker, a Vancouver sex therapist, notes that the reasons women have sex change throughout their lives, and it’s a positive trend that women are not only enjoying their sexuality but also taking charge of it.

“For women, it’s about tuning in to what’s important to them and being assertive about it,” Rucker says in a phone interview. “Historically, they don’t speak up as much for themselves. It doesn’t mean they don’t care, but…it’s important for a woman to be able to express herself and her desires.”

The benefits of sex go far beyond the feel-good factor, Morgan notes.

Before and during orgasm, a woman’s level of oxytocin—a hormone that also acts as a neurotransmitter—goes up five times, Morgan explains, and the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone is released as well.

Sex is also a good form of exercise: a woman can burn 85 calories or more during a half-hour romp, she says. It also increases testosterone, which contributes to bone health.

Then there are the positive effects sex has on quality of sleep, circulation, cardiovascular function, and immunity.

“Are women thinking they should have sex to boost their immunity and make a cold go away? Probably not. But, subconsciously, there are so many benefits.”

Not all of the responses in Buss and Meston’s research were positive. Eighty-four percent of married women said that at some point they had sex out of a sense of duty, a fact that Morgan says is rooted in the sexual repression of the Victorian era. At the time, women were to “lie back, think of the queen, and wait for it to be over.”

“Sexual misery and feelings of inadequacy go back to Victorian culture,” Morgan says. “The sexual frustration [during that time], on women especially, is undeniable.”

Other reasons women gave for having sex ranged from boosting self-esteem to getting their partners to do household chores. For some, it was linked to money, a job promotion, or a raise.

Some women said they had sex to “mate guard”: to prevent their partner from straying. Others did it to recover from a breakup. “One woman said the best way to get over a man was to get under another one,” Meston says.

It’s her hope that Why Women Have Sex will get more people contemplating what’s luring them to the bedroom.

“Most women don’t spend a lot of time thinking about why they have sex,” Meston says. “My hope is that it will make them think more about the reasons they have sex and the consequences, and make more informed choices, better choices.…I’m hoping they’ll be able to identify those reasons, do a mental survey of their own.”

Lightbulb Why Humans Have Sex

The instinct of procreation is the most important instinct in all living beings from the amoeba to the human. "Life is given for creating life", whether one likes it or not.

http://www.newsweek.com/2009/09/27/t...happiness.html

Why Humans Have Sex

Arch Sex Behav (2007) 36:477–507

Most and least frequently endorsed reasons for having sex

There were nine themes that appeared to characterize the most frequently endorsed reasons for having intercourse:

(1) pure attraction to the other person in general;

(2) experiencing physical pleasure;

(3) expression of love;

(4) having sex because of feeling desired by the other;

(5) having sex to escalate the depth of the relationship;

(6) curiosity or seeking new experiences;

(7) marking a special occasion for celebration;

(8) mere opportunity; and

(9) sex just happening due to seemingly uncontrollable circumstances

Men, significantly more than women, endorsed reasons centering on the physical appearance and physical desirability of a partner, such as ‘‘The person had a desirable body,’’ ‘‘The person’s physical appearance turned me on,’’ and ‘‘The person had an attractive face.’’

These findings support the evolution-based hypothesis that men tend to be more sexual aroused by visual sexual cues than are women, since physical appearance provides a wealth of cues to a woman’s fertility and reproductive capacity (Buss, 1989b, 2003; Symons, 1979).

Men, significantly more than women, also endorsed reasons indicating experience seeking and mere opportunity.

These findings support the theory that a major historical constraint on a man’s reproductive success has been the number of different women he can successfully inseminate, and this selection pressure has led men to have evolved a greater desire for a variety sexual partners.

Women exceeded men in endorsing certain of the emotional motivations for sex, such as ‘‘I wanted to express my love for the person’’ and ‘‘I realized that I was in love.’’

These findings are consistent with previous research (e.g., Carroll et al., 1985; Denney et al., 1984; Leigh, 1989).

They also support the evolution-based theory that women, more than men, prefer sex within the context of an ongoing committed relationship, and feelings or expressions of love provide signals of that commitment (Buss, 2003; Townsend, 1998).

Also supporting this theory were findings that suggest sex without emotional involvement was a more powerful motivator for men than for women. Men exceeded women, for example, in endorsing items related to pure physical pleasure, such as wanting to achieve an orgasm, because it felt good, or simply because they were ‘‘horny.’’

It is important to note, however, that most of the emotional motivations for engaging in sex were not endorsed more frequently by women (e.g., ‘‘I wanted to feel connected to the person’’; ‘‘I wanted to intensify my
relationship,’’ ‘‘I desired emotional closeness’’).
