We got some of your smoke last week here in the valley! (Eugene)
Our cars were even spotted with ash.
Maybe we can send some of our rain down there...

This was an odd post to read right after that 'cooking disaster' thread. First thing popping into my head was "How can you burn popcorn enough to smoke up a valley?"

well, here goes
do you keep it in a cage?
what do they eat?
can you bring him outside without fear of him running away?
Are they vicious or can you cuddle them?
how long will they live?
are they good with kids?
are they good with cats?
are they stinky?
do they sing like guinea pigs do?

He sleeps in a cage, when Im in bed and when I'm at class and stuff. Mind you, my grandfather is a carpenter... and as far as rodent living quarters go, we built him a fucking MANSION. (I can upload a pic of it if you want. Its incredible.) However, during the day when I'm in my room I let him run free. Often when I'm on my computer he is just sitting on my desk, or even on my shoulder or lap. And he's trained well enough that he knows at night time he has to climb back into his cage, and he does it on his own.
They eat regular timothy hay and alfalfa hay pellets. Some people feed them sugar treats or raisins.... THIS IS BAD. They can't metabolize sugar and will die of slow painful renal failure.
No taking then outside, especially not in US climates. They can't really be a temperature above ~70F. They'll die.
Like most animals, some are mean and bite. But its probably because they never get touched/held and just sit in a cage alone. Marty is a little cuddlebucket.
Pet stores will tell you they live 8-10 years. Thats how long they live if you follow their shitty incorrect and shady advice. A properly cared for chinchilla could potentially live to be 25 years old.
Again, some are good with kids and some aren't. Its a personality thing.
They're naturally a prey animal, so probably not good with cats.
They're SUPER clean animals actually. The only thing that smells a little bit is their urine, but most can be "potty trained" to pee in a litter box. Marty pees in a 6"x6" tray, and every 2 days I change the bedding in it. And he's never smelled bad. Very easy to clean up after them. Their fur is a little unique, in that you can't bathe them. I can tell you about that later.
Again... Ive heard people say that their chinchillas hum, chirp and bark constantly. (They make a funny chirpy noise when they're happy. They bark like a dog when they are scared.) I didn't hear Marty make a noise for the first 4-5 months. Even to this day, Ive only heard him bark twice. He chirps every few weeks. Some people's chinchillas sit around chirping all day though, so ive heard.

Just some neat stuff I left out, they can jump like 5 feet in the air. Thats why I got him a big cage. You need to give them a couple feet to bounce around. So its gotta be a decent sized cage.
As for their fur... Their fur is 30x more dense than human hair. So you can't get them wet because their fur won't ever dry, because air can't really penetrate down to their skin to dry it off at the roots. So in order to negate the moisture and natural oils that accumulate... In the wild chinchillas roll around in volcanic ash. (Theyre native to the Andes Mountains, btw)
So when you have to take care of one... You give them dust baths every 7-10 days! Its like handing crack to a cocaine addict. THEY LOVE IT. Its SO funny to watch.
i cant get embed to work. Their dust is inside that little house thing. This is a dust bath:

that stuff they are rolling in looks almost like the ash from a charcoal grill. I know absolutely nothing about chinchillas. Damn do they seem to like the "bath"
