My family members sent me so many copies of this particular piece of stupidity I had to resort to humiliating each and every one of them publicly to get them to stop. (Realistically, I understand that I in no way made them grow brains; they just took me off their mailing lists.)

Now, for everyone who got swept up believing this nonsense: As everyone with a brain knows, there are only seven days in a week. This means that a given calendar year can only begin on one of those days. I'll assume you are smart enough to know what those days are.

With me so far? Good. Now, each year will begin on one of these seven days, and proceed happily until the end of February. There, some years will have 28 days and some will have 29, due to this thing we call a "Leap Year". One year might start on a Monday and have 365 days, while another might start on the same day and have 366 days. If you do the math on this, you will learn a very important fact: there are only 14 calendars.

So, you can't possible have an arrangement of dates that only occurs once every 832 years, because there are only 14 calendars.


Some advice for everyone who fell for this nonsense:
1. Everything that your friends and family forward to you in email that contains the words "forward this to ..." is false. All of it. There are no exceptions. It is especially false if it contains the word "money" with an implication that you might receive some.

2. Verify everything. The first thing I did when I read this posting (even knowing that it was false) was to look at a calendar. July 2012, only has four full weekends, and there for cannot have five Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The next month to have such an arrangement will be March of 2013, so expect another flood of this idiocy next February.

3. Verify everything again. It is incredibly easy to visit snopes.com to verify an internet rumor. To paraphrase a surprisingly large number of people who are believed to have said this, "It is far better to research something and feel like a fool, than to post some nonsense and remove all doubt."

Sorry - July's calender doesn't look anything like that. And July does not have 5 Saturdays nor 5 Fridays. And even if it did it isn't all that unusual for a month to begin on a Friday and any 31 day month that begins on a Friday would have 3 of each weekend day.
