Exclamation All Computers Die, Even New Ones; Yours Will Too; You WILL Lose Everything

How many times have you heard of people losing valuable files, pics, music, videos, etc to a computer problem? How many times does it take...?
It really matters little if yours is a month old, a year old, or more; hell, it can happen to a new one, especially with some bugs, infections, glitches, etc. A renown & trusted spy protection company recently released a definitions update that wiped out several before their mistake was discovered and resolved. Some parts fail when new, and so forth - skipping the countless other reasons that computers lose everything. They do, ok? Any questions on that fact? The My Documents on your machine, including My Pictures, My Music, My Videos, etc are to be considered primary working files, but not trusted for storage - please...!

No, the salesman won't remind you of this, as it makes the expensive machine seem vulnerable - and that truth is not good for sales. Some machines may be less likely to fail than others, but they all can. Just accept this, ok - and don't ever trust one.

There are various solutions available, but I like the simplest, cheapest, and most private....

An External Hard Drive, with Western Digital being my preferred brand. At this moment, I can find 160 Gb portable WD models for $56, 320 Gb desktop for $80, 500 Gb for $88, etc. simply by checking Walmart.com - and I could probably find better deals on some models with Google shopping. Cheap! And now for the simple part...

Extremely simple really...
1: Plug it in, plug the cable into your USB, and find find it on My Computer if it doesn't pop-up.

2: Open it, select Make a New Folder, and name it for the date.

3: Now open your My Documents, use CTRL+a to highlight all, select Copy the selected items, target the date-named folder on your EHD, and click Copy.

4: Depending on your computer, USB connection, amount of data, etc - this can take one or more hours. I start mine and go to bed.

5: When finished, compare total size of all documents on the computer to size of the copied folder on the EHD to confirm success, turn off the EHD and unplug it.

6: Repeat often.

7: After you get a few dated folders on the EHD, start deleting as desired. I like to keep the last four I did, and a few more spread out over time, in case I ever want to search for something I had in November, or maybe in 2006, but since deleted.
Can the EHD fail, tho? Oh sure, anything can fail. It's less vulnerable, but I wouldn't keep anything on it only. Just backups, extras, copies of what I have on my computer's working documents. But if I have a house fire, I'll grab the EHD as it's easier to carry out with other items than my laptop, certainly easier than a desktop tower.

Can you pull your computer hard drive, put it in an enclosure and salvage the files? Sure, and you can hitchhike or walk if you're the type who doesn't carry a spare tire in case of a flat, but how reasonable to count on either?

I even carry a large Flash Drive on trips with my laptop and backup pics I download to it every day. It's just good sense, isn't it?

What about online services. I like the privacy of my files on my EHD in my home, but whatever - just do not trust your computer.

I've had a WD My Book for several years and make sure I back up at least monthly. What I paid for a 250GB model 3 years ago will buy 2 -1TB models now. Cheap, easy, and reliable.

There are other ways to back up, but only a moron does not backup valuable files often. I hope this amateurish approach can help those who want help.

If you're computer has "died" as the threadstarter put it you can just remove your harddrive and mount in another computer. and the chance that the internal hardrive goes bust is about the same(maybe even lover since external hdds are moved around more often) as the the external one.

99% of the times you think you lost your files they are easily recoverable.

I backup all my stuff- photos, documents and stuff I have made but not things like music which can be replaced- onto an external HD then copy all that onto another external HD which I keep at my mum's house.

In addition I keep all backups in an encrypted virtual partition for privacy. So if the HD gets pinched the theives will be unable to see anything.

Thanks. Read it. You understand it enough to explain it in laymen terms? Especially....

All I worry about is the porn, which fills up a little more than a tenth of my EHD, so I think that I'm good for a while. It's not that I don't worry, it's just that most of my data is either small enough for the flash drive that I carry everywhere, or it's pictures, which somehow always stay on the camera until printed, and then just disappear from everything except the paper....

You can rewrite on DVDs? Cool. I knew that 700 Mb CDs could be rewriteable, but didn't know that 4.7 Gb DVDs could be. That'd be enough for many, if used often.

That works too, if you use it often. Meritline.com has 8 Gb currently for $15 total US delivered price or 16 Gb for $26.

Happens all the time and members like you are mostly who I had in mind here. Glad you getting in now.

Pass the word to your family & friends. Our members seem to be more puter savy than the average puter owner and this subject is all too often missed.

I only recently lost 20 GB of music. It takes a long time to download that kind of magnitude on a 2MB connection. So I got my EHD for Xmas, which is awesome because I can also plug it in to my Xbox360 (and probably a PS3 as well, though not at the same time) and watch videos, view photos and listen to music (which will sound infinitely better through the telly than when it's through laptop speakers which, as a rule, always suck).
