Default My New Office

For some time now, I've wanted to have a separate office, at least for my writing, if not for my programing work that I don't have anymore. I also wanted to enlarge the living area a bit.

That second part was easy, sort of. The RV had a small built-in snack table that came with two captain's chairs we removed because we needed the storage space more. Without the chairs, we had no need for the table, so it stayed in its box since we bought the RV.

I've been wanting to remove that box for some time now, but had no idea what to do with it. In figuring out how to deal with the previous problem, I realized I can install that box right next to the passenger seat, and use it for a writing table.

The problem, of course, was that the box was holding up the TV set. I disconnected everything, and detached the box cover (which was held on by a piano hinge with twenty screws), then unhooked the box from the wall (another ten screws). The A/V cabinet was moved back out of the way, and the box top (which is now a shelf) was reattached to the wall. It looks much better now (sorry, I don't have "before" photos), and we have more floor space.

The box, however, was too big for the space where I wanted to put it (I knew this in advance). I had to saw three inches off the back, and then rebuild it to be more solid, since it was only held together with staples. Since I wasn't going to rebuild the dashboard anymore, the table was now four inches too wide. So I had to carve out a big notch and place molding over it, to look pretty. I didn't trust this not to fall down, so I bolted it through the wall from the outside, with grommets to waterproof the bolts somewhat.

It was less of a struggle to put the table back in than I thought it would be. I loosened the screws from the outside (which weren't there before, because, as I said before, it was held together with staples), pulled on the side a bit, and the table slid right into the grooves. The big struggle? There was a small storage box inside the main box, which had to come out in order for me to work. Do you think that would go back easily? Not on your life! I have it held in with two staples (no major support is needed here), but I may try to screw it in some time later. But probably not.

So, here's the finished product:

As if that's not enough, take a look at this molding. Do you like that color? Is that a nice stain?

I made it myself.

The strip of molding is only three-quarters by about twenty-five inches, and I wasn't about to spend five or six dollars for a full can of stain, only to throw the rest out. I did, however, have some vinegar and rusty nails. I tossed them both into a beer bottle, and two days later, had three ounces of stain at no cost.

After staining the molding, I had enough left over to stain a small piece of paneling I plan to use as guards on a couple of shelves I want to put in the bathroom medicine cabinet. Which I will make using the pieces I cut off the table box. Clever, huh? I'm getting a lot of mileage out of that one box.

The only thing I'm not sure of now, is whether I should move my entire office to this table, or just use it for writing. I lean toward the latter, since the laptop takes up less room, and I like to watch the news and read S&FF in the mornings, which I wouldn't be able to do if the computer is essentially in another room.
