I recall real first class -- I was upgraded to first (absolutely no idea why!) on a long 747 flight on United and was served chateaubriand from a carvery in the middle of the front main cabin. Alas, never again -- now domestic first class meals (when you get them!) are about like coach was 20 years ago. And coach is sandwiches I bring on board -- they're cheaper (and better) than the in-flight purchased sandwiches. *sigh*

I used to be afraid of the plane crashing.
Now when I sit in coach, unceremoniously packed in like sardines with the smells of sweaty fat guys, freshly soiled diapers, and cheap perfume, I secretly hope for a crash.

Not to mention your homemade sandwiches probably don't have sewing needles hidden within.

This is a good capsule. First class is a bit roomier and the seats more comfortable, but I agree with OldDoc that all airline food is crappy.

The last flight I took was my exodus from Hawaii (in the back, next to the restrooms, overnight flight with my wife and our dog -- never got a bit of sleep). I have no intentions of ever flying again. You miss too much.

Well, Jim, I don't think I said quite that. I was talking about domestic first class being pretty meager, but international business class can be quite good. I've never had a chance to try international first (dammit!) but when flew a lot, I got business upgrades several times, and I could get used to that!

Back to tralfamadore with you, CapFan -- perhaps their airline provides nonstandard condiments with their sandwiches. Mine doesn't.

I'd fly Tralfamadore airlines in a heartbeat.
I'd get to travel through time, sometimes hooking up with a hot hollywood starlet on a distant planet where I'd also get to interact with alien lifeforms.
Pretty sweet deal IMO.

International first and business varies hugely by airline. The US carriers tend to have the older more senior and sometimes less interested crew than the foreign airlines. Singapore for service, Swiss or Qantas for food and, years ago, early 70s, Pacific Southwest for uniforms.
